Pulling Up & Reading with Daddy

My baby boy pulled up today! (Ok... I know Jonathan will prefer that I say "Our baby boy"... but, I'm having a my baby boy moment.)

Caleb pulled up from his knees to a standing position this evening while Jonathan and I were playing with him on the floor. I missed it the first time, it happened so fast! He just suddenly was standing up! He did it several more times before we finally got it on video! How cute is he!

Part of our nighttime routine is that Jonathan reads to Caleb in his chair right before he goes to bed every night. Caleb has gotten great at turning the pages!

Wisdom Teeth

I've been putting off having my wisdom teeth taken out for quite some time and I finally had to give in this week. My dentist first mentioned it my first year of college, but I thought to myself it wasn't a good time and I would do it it "when it was convenient". So, a few years later he mentioned it again and I was entering student teaching and thought, it's not a good time, I'll do it "when it's convenient". More time went by and I was newly married and about to move to League City, my dentist mentioned the wisdom teeth and I said again that I'd wait "when it's convenient".

Well, I soon realized "convenient" never happens. Especially not for oral surgery! So, last time I was at the dentist, he told me he was worried about my wisdom teeth having an effect on my other teeth and the possibility of lots of pain if I left them in too much longer. Never being one for pain, I decided I might as well get them out on my own terms. Jonathan and I talked and decided to go ahead and get them removed and that he would take a few days off work to take care of Caleb while I recovered.

Yesterday (Thursday) morning, my mom picked me up and brought me to my appointment. We're lucky that a great oral surgeon has an office around 5 minutes away from my house. The surgery went without complications and I was home by mid-morning. I had been extremely nervous before hand, but a peace came over me as I went into the office and knew everything would be fine.

Since then I've been home relaxing and resting. The medicines have made me tired, but I think I'm healing very well. My mouth is sore and I've napped off and on through yesterday and today. But I would say the pain and swelling have been minimal. They say swelling is the worst on days three and four, so we'll see how I look for church on Sunday! The hardest part now is that I feel fine, but if I hold Caleb he reaches for my face, and I can't have him poking my cheek! So I haven't had much time with him.

I think Jonathan is enjoying his time with Caleb though! He's taken care of him almost non-stop since yesterday morning and is doing a great job! My mom came over for a while this afternoon so Jonathan could go give a tour of NASA to some Aggies and I think she and Caleb had a good time. (I napped while she was here!)

I hate having a break from "normal", but I'm so glad my family can operate for a few days without me! So far I'm recovering well and my boys are doing great together. I can't wait for some REAL food though! I must be patient! Please be praying that my healing continues to go without problems and that Caleb keeps behaving well for Jonathan! And that when I can finally eat regular food again I can think of something really good as my first meal! I haven't figured out what sounds best yet, but I'll be dwelling on that while I'm sipping slim fast and eating grits!

Herb Garden

I may have overdone it again...

I've been planning to tear out all the dead plants in one of the flower beds in the backyard to make my own herb garden. Well, today I put that plan into action. Jonathan took charge of Caleb this morning while I got to work. I had to dig out the dead/mostly dead bushes, clean up the grass and weeds that had taken over, work up the soil, plant my new herbs and add some soil. Luckily, it went as I thought it would. I knew it would be a large undertaking because it had become so overgrown with weeds and grass. (This flower bed was dead when we moved in and left on it's own since the beginning of last summer.)

Jonathan took some pictures to show my progression through the morning and helped me when Caleb was playing or taking his nap. It was a lot of work, but I'm so excited about it! I cut back two of the Indian Hawthorns (hopefully helping and not hurting them) and I even have a tomato plant hanging in the topsy turvy! I just hope I don't kill everything I planted today. I have never been known to have a green thumb!

When I finished that flower bed, I planted some pretty annuals in pots to go on the back patio. I wanted vibrant colors to brighten up the yard! Caleb joined us for part of the morning and had fun playing while he watched Mommy and Daddy. Our little boy sure does love being outside!

(We didn't get a pic from before I started, but just imagine the plants lined up on the grass in the holes in the flower bed instead!)

Bluebonnets!

About 2 minutes from our house, there is a beautiful field of bluebonnets. Jonathan and I decided to take Caleb to take some pictures yesterday. They turned out so cute!

Butterfly Center

As I've said before, we're beginning to take advantage of all the amazing things Houston has to offer. I'm so glad we live just 30 minutes away from so many fun things to do! On Monday, I went with two ladies from our bible study group to the Butterfly Center at the Natural Science Museum. Che and Lindsey each have a toddler and it was so great to watch them have fun!

When we first walked into the exhibit, there was a long hall with typical museum displays (but bright, colorful and kid-friendly). The toddlers ran from one display to another pushing buttons, flipping cards, and having fun. Caleb was interested in the bright colors on the signs! After walking through the hall, there was a doorway to an indoor rainforest area where all the butterflies were. Of course, they moved too quickly for Caleb to really see the them, but he still enjoyed the leaves and waterfall. There were hundreds of butterflies flying around us, so neat!

We spent the morning at the museum and then walked across the street to a flower garden where we had a picnic lunch. It was so nice to spend time with my friends and watch the toddlers run around and play.

When we walked into the exhibit, we first saw this caterpillar. Peyton was the first to sit on it and we decided it would be a good photo op. She and Gavin were so good with Caleb sitting near them!

Uncle Thomas's Birthday & Jonathan's Baptism

My brother's 30th birthday was the week before Easter, so my family got together this weekend to celebrate. We met up at Frenchie's and enjoyed dinner together before heading back to my house for cake and presents! Then Thomas, Kristen and Eli spent the night so that Kristen could run a race this morning.

Jonathan and I still get a little apprehensive about attempting dinner with Caleb, but I think he did pretty well. Our only problem was he was getting so tired because we were keeping him up past his usual bedtime, but he wasn't overly fussy and went to sleep very easily after we got home. While at the restaurant we let him sit on a bench with his book and he was happy for a while! He's so cute!

After getting back to our house, Caleb went to sleep in his crib and Eli went to sleep upstairs in our pack-n-play. The rest of us let Thomas open his gifts and then had cookie cake. How I have a brother that doesn't care for regular cake is beyond me, but the cookie cake was good! After everyone else left, the four of us stayed up way too late talking, but eventually pulled ourselves away from the living room to go to bed.

This morning the whole house was up early, well the adults anyways. Thomas took Kristen to her race before 6 and Jonathan and I were getting up to get ready for his baptism. Jonathan has been planning to be baptized for several months now. He was baptized as an infant, but recently decided that he wanted to be baptized again as a symbol of his personal relationship with Christ. Our friend, John, had the opportunity to baptize him during the early service this morning and my parents, Jonathan's mom and everyone in our small group came to support him. It was so moving seeing so many people gathered to be there for him.

After that we came back home and Thomas, Kristen and Eli returned from Kristen's race so they could get their things packed and ready to go. While they were here, we got to watch Eli learn how to hug (and say hug). He would only hug Caleb which was, of course, ADORABLE! He probably gave 10-15 hugs before he left for lunch! Caleb didn't seem to mind and we got a few pictures of the boys hugging! SO CUTE!

This afternoon I had a church meeting and we went to our small group bible study. After that we decided it was time to relax for the rest of the evening. While we played with Caleb, Jonathan let him stand at the window to look out. It looks like he's trying to escape!

We're not really sure we want Monday to come tomorrow, but we definitely filled our weekend with great times and memories!

6 months old

Caleb turned 1/2 a year old on Saturday. It's so hard to believe that much time has gone by! We had his 6 month doctor's visit today and here are the numbers:

Height: 24 1/2 inches, 1%

Weight: 13 lbs 1 oz, .28%

I know, he's so small! The doctor did have a few comments about his size, but for the most part was very positive considering he's hitting all the milestones on time if not a little early. He's still dealing with allergies and a cough that's come with them, but he's doing great!

Zoo Picture

The "professional" photographers at the zoo took our picture last week when we went to visit. I'm not about to buy the pictures, but I did copy them onto my computer. Definitely not the cute, smiley picture I was hoping for, but it's funny that both boys look like they really have no interest!

Caleb's 1st Easter

I guess we've had a full Easter weekend instead of just a day!

Caleb had his first Easter Egg hunt on Friday with our play group. Jonathan decided to take off on Good Friday so we could spend the day together. It turned out to be a cooler morning than we expected, but that didn't stop us from collecting an egg! Yep, one egg! Caleb wasn't too interested in picking up the bright eggs from the grass, so I was patient for one and then decided to watch the other kids. We'll do more next year when he is more likely to get the idea. For now, it was nice to get a few pictures!

On Saturday, we all went up to Houston to watch the Robonauts, Jonathan's old high school robotics team (which his work group sponsors/mentors). We watched a match and then had lunch with the team. We weren't there very long, but I enjoyed meeting more of the guys Jonathan works with and letting Caleb enjoy being outside. (We had lunch at Discovery Green, a park in Houston) I think I have a future robotics member in my house! Caleb wasn't at all scared by the loud noises and was actually excited at some points during the match. I guess I should've known, with Jonathan as his Dad he doesn't stand a chance!

We enjoyed church on Sunday morning and then hurried home for some family time! We had a houseful of family over for a late lunch to celebrate Easter. I loved looking around our table at our family all gathered together. We are so blessed to have so much of our family nearby.

By the end of the day on Sunday, Caleb was exhausted! We started his bedtime routine around 5 because he couldn't last any longer! We've been trying to relax since then and take it easy! My little man likes his schedule and routines! Hope everyone else had a blessed Easter!

Children's Museum & the Zoo

Caleb and I have begun to explore what Houston has to offer!

Last Friday, our playgroup met at the Children's Museum in Houston for a morning of fun before heading to a nearby park. Our museum has a "tot spot" upstairs specifically for kids younger than 3. There is a soft area for babies with mirrors and small toys and there are other areas appropriate for kids crawling and toddling around. We spent a lot of time in front of the mirrors this visit, but when he starts moving I see us really taking advantage of such a great place to play! We then went to Hermann park for a picnic lunch after everyone finished playing. On the short 5 minute drive to the park, Caleb fell asleep so I put him in the stroller and he slept through most of our picnic! He happened to wake up as I was getting finished with lunch though, so we enjoyed sitting near the water and listening. As much as other people really distract him, sounds in nature seem to distract him even more. Wind, water, birds...they tend to catch his attention and hold it! It was very cute to watch him try to figure out what he was hearing. We had a great time even though I got a teeny bit lost on my way there!

On Monday, Caleb and I joined Aunt Kristen and Cousin Eli at the Houston Zoo. I love that we can both drive around 30 minutes for the boys to spend time together! I enjoyed watching Eli get excited about different animals and walk everywhere! To think, in a year Caleb will be doing those things! Caleb wasn't really interested in the animals, but he enjoyed being outside and getting the fresh air. We brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed watching the ducks and swans while we ate by the water. Soon after lunch both boys got tired and fussy, so we decided to call it a day. We must have worn out Caleb because he napped on the way home, was up for an hour or so and then took another nap at 3:30 and I had to wake him at 6 to eat. I was worried that he wouldn't go to bed after taking a nap so late, but he went to bed at 7:30. I guess all the fresh air did him good!

Eli decided our stroller looked more comfy, so I pushed him....

.... while Aunt Kristen held Caleb!

Caleb loves the elephant we got to commemorate his first trip to the Zoo!

I'm so glad that the weather is finally beginning to get warmer and we'll be able to get out and do more. And I love the friends and family we get to do things with!

I haven't forgotten!

Just a short post to let you all know that I haven't forgotten about the blog! We've had a busy couple of weeks and Spring allergies have begun. Yuck! To be honest, when I get down time, all I want to do is relax. I've got to figure out a better coping strategy for sinus headaches this season. Any suggestions? (No meds allowed!)

Unfortunately, my poor baby boy seems to be taking after his Momma. When I took him to the dr this week, his doctor warned us that allergies don't usually appear until 18-24 months, so it was more likely that he has a cold. After she examined him though, she looked at me and said, "You're right, it's allergies." She commented that she couldn't believe a 6 month old has such obvious allergies. Throughout my pregnancy, I hoped and prayed that my children would not have to deal with the medical problems I have. So far, we're not starting out so well. And the real kicker is, he's too little to take medicine. If he were an average 6 month old we wouldn't have that problem, but at 13 pounds, the dr isn't comfortable giving him meds.

Anyways, that's what's been going on around here. This weekend I plan on filling you in on our trip to the Children's Museum and the Zoo, as well as other things that have been going on in our home!

We're planning on our first veggie dinner tonight with Caleb - carrots, We'll let you know how that goes too! Have a great day!
