Growing Up

It doesn't feel like Caleb is a baby anymore! Every day he seems to learn new things. I can't tell you how many times I stand back, watch him, and think....when did he get so big?!? That's what this weekend has been like. While he's been fighting a stomach bug since last week, you would never guess anything is bothering him. Here are two videos of what he's now capable of, and he's gotten a lot faster at both since these videos were taken.

Drinking Water

...pool water, that is! Caleb and I started "Mommy and Me" swim lessons this week and his primary goal seems to be drinking as much pool water as he can! We are doing a two week Monday through Thursday class at the YMCA and so far I think we both are having fun. Caleb loves kicking his feet in the water and has been trying to pull up on the side of the pool to get out like the "big" kids! He seems to be the youngest of our little class with kids as old as (I'm guessing) around 2 1/2. Blowing bubbles is not something he has accomplished yet though! Every time I put him close enough he sticks out his tongue to drink the water instead!

While having an 8:15 class every day has been rough for the morning routine, I'm hoping after two weeks we're used to our new routine so this can be my time to work out. I've been working out off and on over the last few months and I feel so much better when I get that time for myself, both physically and mentally. I'm also enjoying having more time with Jonathan's sister, Sarah, and her little girl, Lana. Now that Sarah is a stay at home mom we're getting more opportunities to get the cousins together. I think Lana is enjoying swimming too!

My Mom got the chance to stop by after her workout (she works out at the Y too) and took some pictures for us on Wednesday! How cute are our little water babies!

Stairs

We have accidently discovered that Caleb can now make his way up the stairs! While Jonathan was playing with Caleb upstairs in our game room yesterday, he stepped away for a few minutes and when he came back, Caleb was at the bottom of the two steps that lead into the room. Jonathan decided to walk past him and go into the game room just to see what he would do. Caleb turned and crawled right up the steps like he's done it all along! When Jonathan went back down the steps again, Caleb followed and fell down the two steps again like it was no big deal. I'm glad he doesn't get scared or hurt easily, but we're now working on going backwards down the steps safely!

As this was going on, Jonathan called for me to bring the camera...so here's a video of Caleb's second trip up the stairs. Today we made a trip from the 1st floor all the way to the 2nd and all I did was stand behind him just in case. Of course, he giggled most of the way up because he thought I was chasing him, but I can't believe he's crawling up the stairs so easily already! My silly little monkey : )

Jonathan's 1st Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to my amazing husband! Caleb and I are so lucky to have you. One of my favorite things is to watch you and Caleb playing, I love the way you interact with him - you are the best at getting him to giggle uncontrollably! Thank you for everything you do for us both! We love you so much!

Such a little boy on Daddy's leg.

All my boys!

Always a story with Daddy before he goes to bed.

Have you ever seen such a happy face on a little boy?!?

Two busy weeks

Wow! I can't believe it's been two weeks since I wrote the last post! We have been more busy than I can ever remember being!

Caleb and I have been swimming at a friend's house, had some play time with cousin Lana, gone to Palm Beach with our play group, spent some time with GG and Papa, and took a day trip up to Spring to visit with Kristen and Eli (not to mention the usual grocery shopping and weekly errands). Since Caleb is now quite mobile, I am much worse about taking pictures! When he stayed in the same spot to play it was so much easier to pull out the camera, now when we're out I'm constantly trying to make sure I don't loose him! Let me just say this...we are NEVER this busy! I always try to have a few fun things to do each week, but I don't like to be busy day after day. I'm very much a home-body and Caleb enjoys playing with his toys at the house.

A few random pictures from the last two weeks:

Isn't he so pitiful!

Besides being busy during the day, we've also had a lot of events going on in the evenings. Some friends of ours had a gender reveal party on Monday. We found out they are having a boy! He'll be another friend for Caleb to play with! We also went to Lana's 1st birthday party. I can't believe our niece is a year old already. She and Caleb had a great time playing during her party. We had some old friends over for dinner last weekend and stayed up too late talking, but I'm so glad we were able to get together.

The birthday girl!

Grandpa Ron and Jonathan with the two cousins.

And my favorite part of the last two weeks.... I started cake decorating classes! Sarah (Jonathan's sister), Katy (my sister) and I all decided to take a class together. I can't speak for all of us, but I'm having so much fun! The first night we decorated cookies (which were eaten before I could take a picture), at our second class we decorated a whole cake! It's certainly not perfect, but WAY better than I ever could have done before this class. We have two weeks left of the basics class and then I think I'll sign up for course 2.

Corpus Christi Videos

Ok... we took about a million videos of our trip and I painfully narrowed it down to 5 that other people might actually want to watch! I know, 5 is a lot, but it took a lot to bring the number down that far! It's not my fault that Caleb is so darn cute on video! : )

Blanket Monster: Jonathan put a blanket over Caleb the first day we were in the hotel and we watched him try to get out of it... it was funny to see him move around and try different things to get out!

Swimming with Daddy: Jonathan and Caleb had fun in the pool at our hotel.

Beach Baby: Jumping and splashing waves at the beach.

Chasing Daddy: Crawling after Daddy in the hotel...wow, he's gotten fast!

Who's the other baby?: Caleb got excited when he found the mirror in our hotel, he could've stayed there for hours!

Corpus Christi

We’re home! For the past four days we have been in Corpus Christi enjoying a much needed family vacation. It took us a while to decide where to go on our first vacation with Caleb and I think we made the perfect choice!

We left at 4:30 on Wednesday morning so that Caleb would sleep most of the four hour trip (which worked out very well) and so that we could enjoy our first day instead of driving for most of it. When we got to Corpus we enjoyed a big breakfast at Cracker Barrel, took a drive to find everything, and walked through a botanical garden. The botanical garden was really interesting. There were, of course, lots of plants/flowers but there was also a butterfly garden and a walking path. We enjoyed our visit there, but I think if we ever go back we’ll go earlier in the morning, it sure was hot!

We were ready to check into our hotel when 3:00 came around! We reserved a suite with separate living area and bedroom so that when Caleb napped or went to bed at 7 we wouldn’t have to be silent. It worked out great and he did really well sleeping in an unfamiliar environment. We had a few problems with naps because he would fall asleep for 5 minutes in the car and then not want to nap later, but other than that he slept just as well as he does at home! It was also fun to watch him crawl from one room to the other. He’s really gotten a lot better at the whole crawling thing since last week!

On Thursday, we took Caleb to the Texas State Aquarium. We watched dolphin training, an otter play time and an “around the world” tour of some hawks and a few other animals besides walking around the regular exhibits. Caleb seemed most interested in the birds (he likes to watch them fly by) and the dolphins. We’re at the stage now that aquariums are really more interesting than zoos because the animals in an aquarium move around a lot more than animals in the zoo. That afternoon we took a dip in the pool at our hotel. I had seen Caleb in a pool at Palm Beach, but Jonathan had not. Caleb was laughing and smiling the whole time in the pool and trying to crawl up the steps… we may have to start using the baby gate at our stairs now!

We decided to have a beach day on Friday. We slathered up in sunscreen and went to enjoy the sand and waves. We found a beach that had picnic tables up near the road, which was incredibly convenient to keep all of our things from getting sandy! We played on the sand for a while before taking a walk along a nearby fishing peer and playing in the water. Again, it was water… so Caleb loved it! Later that evening we went to Joe's Crab Shack. There was a great view of the water from the table and we were able to go on a walk along the water after we ate.

Sadly, Saturday came way too quickly and we had to pack up this morning before hitting the road. We planned to take our time at the hotel and leave so Caleb could have his morning nap in the car. Last weekend while we were with Papa he suggested that we stop in Victoria to see the historic downtown on our trip, so we stopped there during lunchtime to have a picnic in the park. It was a nice little square with some beautiful buildings nearby and a gazebo in the center.

We are now on the last leg of the trip home and should be pulling into our driveway in a few hours. I’m ready to be home, but had a fantastic time on our vacation! And now I’m ready to plan our next trip…. Any suggestions???

Memorial Day Fun!

I absolutely LOVE my family and I love that we get together regularly! It is such a blessing to truly enjoy spending time with every single person born into or married into my family! Late last week, GG called up everyone and asked if we could all get together for a Memorial Day Fish Fry! Of course, we said "count us in!". My Uncle Derrill makes fish far better than any restaurant I've ever been to, and, in my opinion, does not cook often enough so we jump at any chance we get for him to man the grill!

On Monday afternoon we joined GG, Papa, Derrill, my parents, Kristen, Eli and Mal in Kemah. We enjoyed the afternoon outside with a breeze coming in off the bay. Derrill and Papa took care of the fish while the ladies brought all the extras. Derrill even made a pool for the boys with an inflatable boat! We spent several hours there eating, laughing and watching the boys play in the water. It's funny, I actually have pictures from when I was a kid and we had a baby pool set up in the same spot for us to play in while the adults talked on the patio!

When it was time to go, Kristen and Eli came back to the house with us to spend the night. Thomas is out of town, but it was great to have them stay with us! It's fun to watch Eli play around Caleb. I think he wants to play with him, but doesn't know how! Kristen and I had planned a few weeks ago to take the boys to Palm Beach and it made more sense for them to spend the night rather than drive up to Spring and then back down to Galveston the next day!

If you don't know, Palm Beach is the "pool" part of Moody Gardens in Galveston. We love it because it is sloped around the edges like the beach (meaning I can let Caleb sit in the water) but it's chlorinated water. There are two large pools, a splash pad, and a water playground. They also have clean, white sand and beach umbrellas and chairs. This was Caleb's first time in a pool (baby pool not included) and I wasn't really sure how he would handle it. Crazy for me to worry... he LOVED it! He kept splashing and jumping on me! I let him sit on the sloped area with me for a while and also took him out in the deeper water so it could surround him. He also loved playing in the sand! I put him down on a blanket and he kept crawling over to the sand to play in it! Thank goodness he never put it in his mouth, he just squished it in his hands! Tuesday afternoon I had a VERY worn out little boy, but I know he had a great time and I can't wait to take him again!

Between painting on Saturday and Sunday, fish fry on Monday and Palm Beach on Tuesday we were certainly exhausted, but the extended weekend was a great one! So glad Caleb has so many opportunities to spend time with his amazing family!
